Here you will see some of the most unique Contemporary Sand Dollar-,
Ocean-, Sea Shell- and Sea Bird Artwork available. Made possible
to you by Duffy Sadorus.
Some of the sculptures you see in the animation to the right is
approximately 60" in diameter. Made of approximately 21 pieces of Basswood. The whole process requires about 100 hours of labor from the
time the wood is in the studio to the time it is ready to hang
on the wall. Each one of the Sand Dollars are different, just as in nature.
The artist uses this to create a piece of work which looks amazingly
like the real Sand Dollar in its outline and design. Only 100 of the large Sand Dollars
will be sold. There is however a small version of the Sand Dollar.
It is approximately 36" in diameter. Only 500 of these will be
sold.
The Sea Shell...
Some of the artwork that Duffy has is of other types of sealife and sea shells. This one is
5' across, 5' high and weighs 85 lbs. It is more than 4" at it's
thickest point. and sculpted entirely from basswood. The Sea Shell is coated with a brilliant paint to bring out the impact of the
real delicate and vibrant sea life.
Some Facts about Sand Dollars
Mellita quiinquiesperforata
Also called KEYHOLE URCHIN. Average size 3 inches; largest 5 inches; non-edible.
Dark, purple-brown, but turns green when taken from water and
dead shells are dull white.
A flat, thin shell with five slits which resemble a keyhole. It is covered above
and below minute velvety spines. A delicate design, like the petals
of a flower, it is etched on the under surface -- from this tube
feet protrude, enabling the animal to breathe and to move about.
The spines also aid movement. It does not seem able to right itself
if turned on its rounded side. The mouth is centered on the underside.
Found in lagoons and sandy beaches. Native to Florida and the
West Indies. |
